The Original Family

The Originals is a supernatural drama and spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, created by Julie Plec for The CW. It follows the Mikaelson family — Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah — the world's first vampires, known as "the Originals" because they were the original vampires turned by magic a thousand years ago. The series opens with the three siblings returning to New Orleans for the first time since 1919, drawn back by a prophecy and the discovery that the werewolf Hayley Marshall is pregnant with Klaus's child — a girl who will become the first tribrid, holding the bloodlines of vampire, werewolf, and witch in one being.

In their absence, Klaus's former vampire protégé and adoptive son Marcel Gerard has claimed the French Quarter as his own kingdom, ruling over the vampires while the witches and werewolves chafe under his iron fist. Klaus resolves to take down Marcel and reclaim the city his family originally built, even as a war brews between the supernatural factions and the witches seek to sacrifice his unborn daughter. Across five seasons and 92 episodes, the Mikaelsons face returning parents Mikael and Esther, the ancient witch Dahlia who claims firstborn children, the prophecy of their own downfall, the mystical menace known as the Hollow, and finally a fractured family reunion years later as a teenage Hope Mikaelson comes into her powers at the Salvatore School. The series ran from October 3, 2013 to August 1, 2018 and spawned the spin-off Legacies, which follows Hope at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted.
